Linda Hodges Gallery is pleased to introduce Nancy Loughlin in a one person debut exhibition titled: "Dominion, Desire and Decor." Loughlin's oil on canvas paintings are based on the interconnections and growing distance between the natural world and modern society's artificial ecology.
Loughlin's subjects; flora and fauna, houses, home decor, insects and story book characters, are organized in a ephemeral world of macroscopic proportions, the purpose of which is to question the theistic contention that humans have 'Dominion' over nature. The artist relies on unexpected juxtaposition and pictorial illusions, fractured space and superimposed line-drawing to make a statement regarding our need to reorganize nature into something of our making. Loughlin sums up: "Our 'Desires' fuel technology, consumerism and urban growth...we surround ourselves with 'Decor,' then discard it, and desire it again in a never ending cycle..."
Nancy Loughlin received her B.F.A. in 1968 from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, CA, and her MFA in 1970 from the Otis Art Institute of Los Angeles, CA. She has been the recipient of numerous awards including a John Biata Foundation Scholarship in 1968, a Women Painters of Washington Award in 1998 and a American Artists Magazine Award in 2001.
