Seattle Sculptor Deloss Webber's second solo exhibition at the
Linda Hodges Gallery explores the theme of relationship. His abstract but
clearly anthropomorphic sculptures of stone and wood serve as metaphors for
the multi-layered aspects of contemporary coupling and intimacy.
The artistic desire to depict emotions has historical precedent and Webber's
work rises to that challenge. In the first of three series for the show is a
piece entitled "Dancing," an obvious symbol for the dance of life - it's
joys and passions. In a choreographed interaction tall, carved fir, red and
yellow cedar sculpture relate as couples would.
Another series of work is inspired by Webber's interest in the industrial
landscape i.e. salvaged objects and weathered surfaces. Now the forms are no
longer dancing. The weight of these granite and basalt pieces contrast with
the playfulness of the "dancers," creating a sober and static sensibility.
In the last series for the exhibition Webber returns to his traditional
material of found stone and fiber weaving. A unity, stillness and a sense of
permanence marks this work - reflecting the artistic ideas about a mature
relationship. Deloss Webber's sculpture is exhibited throughout the United
States and internationally, including Chicago, New York, San Francisco and
London, England. His work is included in many prominent public and private
collections.
