Jones has had a steady successful career in Seattle for the last 20 years. In addition to following his personal vision as a landscape painter, an award from Central Washington State University has inspired the artist to take a harder, closer look at the land, and in particular the topography of his former home, Central Washington. Jones became an artist/explorer in order to create a work that would identify with the unique geography of Central Washington. During his forays into the desert-like landscape he became fascinated with the diverse ecological environment and how nature responds in the aftermath of manmade disruptions, such as the burning off of fields after the harvest. Even though the Yakima river cuts through the hills it has had little effect on the somber, arid atmosphere. Nature, combined with man's interference has created a compelling visual order. Jones struggled with the ambiguities of flat composition versus the three dimensional. He found himself responding to the minimalistic structure of the canyons and hills. He saw elegance in planar surfaces. Jones related to the land as an extension of himself. Part tourist, part scientist, Jones is a forthright painter using traditional methods and tools. His realistic work incorporates a muted palette and restrained brushstrokes. He relates to the outside world with the idealist's eye and the biologist's curiosity.
