   Robert McCauley

McCauley's newest oil paintings and assemblages are part of an ongoing study appropriately titled ROMANTICISM IN THE LAST DECADE OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY. McCauley continues to explore environmental themes using a three-point interaction of painted landscape to juxtaposed object to word. Romantic and compelling, his idealized landscapes are contained in large, glossy black frames that often include dialogue which reveals some of the ethical and moral issues surrounding man's impact on nature and indigenous cultures. McCauley's trademark addition of sculpture and found object has been scaled down and his new works place greater emphasis on painting. When used, objects are carefully chosen for their relationship to the original concept. Lead strips stamped with text embellish some of the canvases, adding a striking contrast to the ethereal quality of McCauley's subject matter. Such focus on the transcendence of nature and a sense of place reflect McCauley's lengthy ties to the Northwest.
