  Gaylen Hansen was born in Garland, Utah, in 1921. He received his MFA from the University of Southern California, and taught at Washington State University for 25 years, until his retirement in 1982. Hansen has exhibited in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Berlin, and throughout the Northwest. His paintings are in numerous public and private collections in the USA, and he has received several prestigious awards, including the Flintridge Foundation Awards for Visual Artists in 2001. He was the featured subject of a two year traveling exhibition in 2007 - 08, titled "Gaylen Hansen: Three Decades of Paintings," organized by Washington State University Curator Chris Bruce and exhibiting at the Seattle Art Museum, Seattle, Washington, The Salt Lake City Art Museum in Utah and the Missoula Art Museum in Montana.
