"Some of the things that please or affect me are strong simple forms, playfulness, humor, archaic dogs, unusual juxtapositions, stampedes, leaping fish, the bold maneuver, a decisive painting act, a specific placement, growing more eccentric, the explorations of Lewis and Clark, the Palouse moon rising full and orange, red grasshoppers, small-town parades, fearsome creatures lurking in the darkness, campfires, feeling light of foot and sassy, open space, dreams, getting up before sunrise, the Universe, fly-fishing on the North Fork, a sense of place, presence, good friends, volcanic eruptions, trees, love, rocks, tulips, cowboys on horseback, enchantment, setting forth, clear mountain streams and truth artfully stretched." - Gaylen Hansen
Gaylen Hansen was born in Garland, Utah, in 1921. He received his MFA from the University of Southern California, and taught at Washington State University for 25 years, until his retirement in 1982.
