Affiliated Artist    Robert Calvo    Concurrent with these ideas, Calvo is highlighting a "home-spun" nature of objects which in the past were not necessarily created as "art" objects. There is an honest approach to their creation (quilts, needlepoint, etc.) But they have been elevated by contemporary criticism and general evaluation by the public to the status of "high art". This has been true historically also with objects created in more "primitive" cultures which though beautiful were intended primarily to be either functional objects of every day life or objects necessary for important rituals. The idea that they are art and given their greater or lesser degree of value is something determined at a later date.
