The Linda Hodges Gallery is pleased to present a one person exhibition of
new mixed media work by Portland artist Robert Calvo. This new body of work
is informed by Calvo's numerous and varied public artworks and by his
interest in the connection between transience, community and cartography.
Calvo states: "Earlier use of map imagery in my work was tied to specific
themes. For example, a series of small paintings from 2005 which transcribed
meteorological events as reminders of global events. Now, however, maps &
charts are a more formal element like line, color, symmetry, etc. I use them
as a foil to develop compositional ideas as I proceed with the painting."
Robert Calvo was born in Galveston, Texas in 1949, and presently resides in
Portland, Oregon. In 1979, he moved to Florida and two years later received
his B.A. in art with honors, from the University of South Florida at Tampa.
His art is a part of many renown collections including the Tampa Museum of
Art, the Norton Gallery in West Palm Beach, Microsoft and Barnett Bank. The
artist has been the recipient of two grants from the National Endowment for
the Arts and has an impressive resume of large scale public art.
