The Linda Hodges Gallery presents Seattle painter Jim Phalen, who returns to the gallery for his second solo exhibition. Working within the still-life tradition, Phalen continues his exploration of perception, placement, subject and time. Focusing on items that are natural but commodified, i.e. fruits, vegetables and fish, the artist chooses to limit himself to everyday items found at the grocery store. Then, through his tools of perception and paint, elevates his "Kitchen Still Lifes" to iconic status. Jim Phalen has a MFA from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. He has an extensive teaching career including Visiting Professorships at the University of Washington, The University of Puget Sound, Bowdown College in Brunswick, Maine, and Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle. Phalen was the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in 2000 and in 2006 received a Ballinglen Fellowship for an Artist's Residency from the Ballinglen Arts Foundation in County Mayo, Ireland. Phalen's first introduction to a Seattle audience was his solo show at the Frye Museum in 2003.
