Jim Phalen's first introduction to a Seattle audience was his solo show at the Frye Museum in 2003. Widely exhibited on the East and West coast, this will be Phalen's first gallery exhibition in Seattle.
Working within the still-life tradition, Phalen focuses his attention on ideas, perception, placement of subject and time. Even though every day objects are his subject, he elevates them to the profound and uncommon. Freezing time his work reorders the subject so they can be re-experienced. Jim Phalen has a MFA from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. He has an extensive teaching career including Visiting Professorships at the University of Washington, The University of Puget Sound, Bowdown College in Brunswick, Maine, and Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle. Phalen was the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in 2000 and in 2006 received a Ballinglen Fellowship for an Artist's Residency from the Ballinglen Arts Foundation in County Mayo, Ireland
