   Helen O'Toole Images | Resume

The Linda Hodges Gallery presents Helen O'Toole in her fourth one-person exhibition of new paintings. In her new body of work, O'Toole begins with a reference to (and a memory of) three dimensional visual images, monumental forms and shapes that hover in an abstract atmospheric field of light and color. She then, being cognizant of how the space shifts from form to atmosphere, focuses on the relevance of the rectangle in relation to color, light, space and its geometry. O'Toole never specifically describes a particular place or thing, rather she allows light and color to establish a mood dependant on other constructs in her paintings. Helen O'Toole was born in County Mayo, Ireland, in 1963. She received her BFA in 1986 from the National College of Art in and Design, Dublin. In 1987 she moved to the United States to pursue her graduate studies at the Art Institute of Chicago where she graduated with an MFA in 1989. That year, she received a scholarship to the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Skowhegan Maine. O'Toole has participated in a number of residency programs including the Fine Arts Work Center, Provincetown 1991-92, the Tyrone Guthrie Center Ireland, 1992, and Bemis Foundation, Nebraska, 1992-93. In 2007 The University of Washington awarded O'Toole a grant from the Millman Endowment Fund as well as a Graduate School Award. Her work has been exhibited internationally and reviewed in numerous publications. O'Toole is currently an Associate Professor of Painting at the University of Washington.
