   Fred Holcomb    Images   |   Resume

Seattle artist Fred Holcomb returns to the Linda Hodges Gallery in his second exhibition of oil and mixed media on canvas paintings. As in his last show, Holcomb's new paintings are vigorous in color, incorporate deep layering, and utilize abstract imagery to suggest distance. The paintings are primarily panoramic vistas, and some works have a birds-eye view of the terrain. Holcomb's palette ranges from the excitable, almost electrically charged red-orange end of the spectrum to the opposite, the quiet, meditative portion of blues and greens.
While welcoming the perception of depth intrinsic to the various processes he employs, such as washing, scraping and imprinting, Holcomb considers the painting process itself to be the actual subject of his paintings. His titles, such as Coville, Waptus 8 and Ilwaco serve the function of categorizing the work for the artist and do not necessarily describe the paintings as images of these places.
