Linda Hodges Gallery presents noted Landscape Photographer John Anderson's
recent work on the Pacific Northwest: The Dark Shining Wilderness. His
large-format black and white images of The North Cascades, the rain forests
of Mt. Rainier and the rugged coast of Olympic Peninsula exhibit a keen
awareness of the relationship between the land and the light which reveals
it. Reminiscent of his mentor Ansel Adams, John Anderson's images are both
epic and yet deeply personal and sensual conveying his obvious love for the
wilderness.
Having spent his youth climbing and roaming in the Cascades and the
Olympics, Anderson now brings that experience and intimate knowledge with
him as he explores those areas through the lens of his camera, searching for
the gesture or climax of the land that elicits the essence of that
particular place - what the ancients called it's genius or spirit.
John Anderson has been photographing since he was a teenager studying with
Ansel Adams and Brett Weston. He received a BFA from Bennington College in
1981. He is a published scholar of comparative Mythology and an award
winning film maker. Anderson has spent the last several years photographing
the mountains, forests and beaches of the Pacific Northwest: an area that he
feels has been neglected by current masters of black and white photography -
until now.
